Alphabetical list of terms, abbreviations with the definitions in the HR domain of knowledge.

Annual Salary

 

The gross annual salary including holiday pay (currently 8%).

Arbodienst

Occupational Health and Safety Service. [Arbodienst]

The independent service organisation which offers employers and employees expert advice on the drafting and execution of working conditions and sickness and advises on reintegration  and risk assessment.

CAO

CAO: Collective Labour Agreement. [Collectieve Arbeidsovereenkomst]

The collective agreements are between employers (or employers organisations) and trade unions regarding wages and other conditions of employment.

Many sector organisations offer the CAO relevant to their sector on their website.

Dutch Civil Code

 

Reference is sometimes made to articles from Book 7 of the Dutch Civil Code (Dutch: Burgerlijk Wetboek). This is the reason that article numbers are preceded by 7 (e.g. Book 7, Article 652, paragraph 4 Dutch Civil Code BW)).

Employment Agreement

 

An agreement under which the Employee binds himself/herself to perform activities in the employment of the Employer for a specified income and an agreed term.

8% holiday pay

 

By Dutch law it is stated that every employee is obliged to receive 8% holiday pay in the month of May or June over the previous 12 months regular gross salary earned. In general the holiday pay is paid in May.

Holiday entitlement

By law, the minimum number of holiday days' paid leave each year is four times the number of working days a week. In the case of full-time employment, entitlement is 20 holiday days a year (4 x 5 working days a week). For part-time employment the entitlement will be prorated.

A collective labour agreement may include agreements about holiday entitlements.

Monthly Salary

 

The monthly salary agreed between the Employee and the Employer including holiday pay.

PAGO: [Periodiek ArbeidsGezondheidskundig Onderzoek]

Employer could provide Employees with an annual Health Check (PAGO). The health check focuses on the health of the Employee in relation to the job responsibilities and tasks. If required by Employer the Health Check could be extended with a Preventive Medical Research (PMO).

 

Public Holidays

 

Nationally recognized holidays in NL on which days Employees are entitled to leave on full pay;

New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Queen’s Day, Ascension Day, Liberation Day (in the jubilee year 2020, 2025, 2030 et cetera), Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

 

Partner

The married, or domestic partner of the Employee with whom the unmarried Employee has entered into a registered partnership recorded at the Registry of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Registered Partnerships, or a domestic partner with whom the Employee cohabits with the intention of living permanently and with whom the Employee runs a joint household as is evident from a notarial cohabitation contract.

Employer will investigate whether work may be dangerous or could cause harm to the health of Employees. The results are communicated in writing and will be initiated and implemented in an action plan.
